Natural gas accumulates in porous underground rock layers hundreds or thousands of meters underground. This fossil fuel exists in multiple natural forms: associated gas found in oil reservoirs, standalone gas sourced from natural gas fields, coalbed methane locked inside coal seams, gas emitted by underground mud volcanoes, and biogenic gas generated by microorganisms breaking down buried organic debris.
