Subsurface porous rock sequences serve as the primary storage reservoirs for natural gas resources across the globe. Geologically categorized by their formation mechanisms and host rock types, natural gas resources can be divided into five predominant types: oil-associated gas coexisting with crude petroleum within petroleum-bearing traps, non-associated gas independently accumulated in gas-bearing strata, coalbed methane adsorbed onto the internal surfaces of coal matrix pores, mud volcanic gas discharged during mud volcanic eruption and subsurface fluid migration, and low-maturity biogenic gas derived from anaerobic microbial degradation of sedimentary organic materials. Beyond these major geological occurrences, coal-bearing strata also contribute a relatively minor proportion of recoverable natural gas worldwide.
